The Vilakazi Foundation is having a contest! We've been brainstorming ideas for our tagline, and we need some help from you. Here are some examples of taglines:
Allstate: You're in Good Hands. GE: Imagination at Work. Target: Expect More. Pay Less. We'd like to tie in Oklahoma and South Africa, but don't limit yourself. Post your ideas as comments under this update or on our Facebook page. The top choices, decided by the board, will win South African candy. You have until our next meeting, which is Dec. 1. Ready? GO! We have been emailing back and forth with Dr. Eybe Meents of Ngcwanguba Community Health Care Centre. Dr. Meents is a native of Germany working to improve health in the Wild Coast. He operates a few medical clinics in the Coffee Bay area and is in desperate need of supplies. You can read more about Dr. Meents here. We asked him to create a wish list. What are all the things he could use the most? This is what he came up with:
* Blood pressure machine, $2,900 (20,000 South African Rand - ZAR) * Three weight scales, $130 for all three (900 ZAR) * Three baby scales $175 for all three (1,200 ZAR) * Ten thermometers, $145 for all three (100 ZAR) That's it? Imagine coming up with a wish list for an American medical clinic. It probably would add up to far more than $3,350 in equipment. We are working now to find grants for the items for Dr. Meents. If you're intersted in sponsoring a piece of equipment for him, please email leigh@vilakazi.org. Vilakazi is in need of some unique talents.
We are looking for a framer to help us prepare our South African artwork for auction at our Playground Throw Down rock-paper-scissors tournament and our wine tasting in the spring. We have a few small pieces and a couple larger ones. Any help with matting and framing would be amazing! We also need some web help. Our board member Carrie Jacobs is doing her best, but she has limited design and web skills. She would greatly appreciate some help! Can you help? Or do you know someone who could? Contact Leigh Jacobs at leigh@vilakai.org or comment here. Our new board member Rebecca Cruise and college liaison Lauren Dennison were featured in The Oklahoman yesterday. The article shared some information about Vilakazi and their appointment to our board. We are so proud to have them join us, and we're so excited that they were recognized in the paper!
You can read past stories about Vilakazi on our History page! Thank you so much to all of our wonderful volutneers who braved the heat of the 2010 Plaza District Festival! Our volunteers report the the festival was a lot of fun. They were able to hand out candy and talk to people about Vilakazi's mission and the upcoming Playground Throw Down rock-paper-scissors tournament. We were able to sign up some new folks to join our email newsletter. (Interested in joining? Sign up here.)
Thanks again to our fantastic volunteers! Your time means the world to us! We're looking for volunteers to hand out candy and flyers for Vilakazi at a booth we have at the Plaza District Festival tomorrow. We only need four more volunteers. The open shifts are from 12 to 2 p.m., 6 to 8 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. All we're doing is handing out candy and asking people to join our email list. We could really use some help!
Why would it be amazing to volunteer? 1. Every volunteer gets TWO free entries into our rock-paper-scissors tournament in December! 2. You get to hang out at the Plaza Festival. 3. You get to eat some of the free candy we're giving away. If you can help, just call Leigh at (405) 255-1281 to sign up. It will be super fun! Thanks for all your support! We are so excited about our rock-paper-scissors tournament! The Playground Throw Down will be Dec. 8 at Brix, an absolutely awesome restaurant in Bricktown. It's open to all ages and should be a ton of fun! The event will include drink specials, appetizer deals and some fierce competition. And it only costs $5 to play! Proceeds will go to supporting our mission of helping South African children lead better lives by improving access to health, education and athletics.
We're looking for all kinds of volunteers who can help us plan and promote this exciting event. Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Wendesday, Oct. 13 at Cuppies and Joe, 727 NW 23. Join us! Our meetings are always open, and we'd love to have all the volunteer help we can get! We had some absolutely outstanding applicants for our board vacancy, but we had to choose only one. We are so excited to have Rebecca Cruise join us! She's wrapping up her doctorate at the University of Oklahoma. We also decided to create a new ex-officio position - college liaison - that will be filled by Lauren Dennison, a senior at the University of Central Oklahoma.
You can read about Rebecca and Lauren (along with our other board members) on the new Board of Directors page on our website. We are both honored and excited that Rebecca and Lauren are joining the team. And we hope that all our applicants will continue their relationship with Vilakazi. THey're support means the world. |
